Intramurals
Since the establishment of Davidson College in 1837, the college has attracted scholars to its institution that are well-rounded individuals. The college of Davidson has continually provided support to allow its students to participate in activities besides those dealing with strictly academics. The intramurals at Davidson are steeped in tradition, but they have also been pliable enough to change as the institution itself has changed. Over the ages, intramurals at Davidson have allowed the student bodies to become not only a group of students studying at an institution, but a class that is striving to maintain well-balanced lives while furthering their education.
Intramurals at Davidson have come to mean something more than extracurricular activities; they are activities that serve, spiritual, athletic, and social purposes. Although Morrison Hall no longer exists on the Davidson campus, during its fifty-five years as a Y.M.C.A for the Davidson student body it provided spiritual guidance along with a place to study, workout, ice-skate, and take part in R.O.T.C.
The Lake Campus, which is currently on Lake Norman, as weith with its predecessor, Lake Wiley, has become more than a beach to the students of Davidson. It is a place to swim, water-ski, sail, canoe, and ride horses among many other activities. The College of Davidson has taken advantage of its location near Lake Norman and provided its students with not just playing fields and a gym for athletic activities, but also waterfront property that can be utilized throughout the year.
The Freshmen Cake Race has become the event that marks the beginning of school for incoming freshmen. It is a time of both competition and class socializing that ends with a sweet dessert. Other intramurals such as flicker ball and numerous club teams have allowed the life of a Davidson student to be about more than just studying.
Although the student body and administration of Davidson College is constantly changing, intramurals will always be a part of the college. There has been a need at Davidson during the past 166 years and there will be a need in the future 166 years, for students to take part in activities that allow them to be well-balanced adults.
