Luther McKinnon

Luther McKinnon

(b. 1840 d. 1916) The first Davidson alumnus to become president of the college, Reverend Luther McKinnon, D.D. was salutatorian of the class of 1861 and had served as a Confederate chaplain. McKinnon, also, served as the president of Floral College in Robeson County, North Carolina, and as a trustee of the Davidson College from 1870 until 1885, and President of the Board of Trustees from 1878 until 1885. Almost immediately after assuming the presidency of Davidson College in 1885, he suffered an attack of what was diagnosed as "rheumatism." His illness forced him to submit his resignation in 1887, although the Board of Trustees did not accept it until 1888. McKinnon's illness left him an invalid, and he died in 1916.
