BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:
Walter Lingle graduated from Davidson College in 1892. He attended Union Theological Seminary, graduating in 1896. He taught Hebrew and Greek at the seminary for two years before accepting a call to the Presbyterian Church at Dalton, Georgia. Four years later he accepted a call in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where he stayed for five years. In 1907 he accepted a call from the First Presbyterian Church in Atlanta Georgia where he remained until 1911. He then accepted a professorship at Union Theological Seminary, where he remained for 2 years. From 1918 until 1921 he was president of the Presbyterian General Assembly's Training School. He resigned from Union Theological Seminary in 1924 to devote his full attention toward the presidency of the Assembly Training School. In 1929, he became president of Davidson College, having served as a trustee and as president of the trustees for many years. He served as president for 12 years until his retirement in 1941. He died in 1956.

The biographical information includes obitiaries, an autobiography, and family information. There is correspondence with the Presbyterian General Assembly Training School, Presbyterian Churches, Union Theological Seminary, Lexington Presbyterian Church, Stillman College, Davidson College, and his family. The speeches are from Davidson College, as well as sermons and speeches based on Biblical studies. The Literary Materials include manuscripts on the Assembly Training School, Davidson College, and Union Theological Seminary, plus manuscripts on Bible studies, Presbyterianism, Religious Education, and the Church. There are also many published manuscripts. The notebooks are on the Presbyterian Church and the Bible. In addition to the Biographical Information there is a copy of an unpublished biography by Mr. LeGette Blythe. There are some photographs. The printed material discusses the Assembly Training School, the Auburn Affirmation, his tenure as president of Davidson College, Stillman College, and Union Theological Seminary. There is also an oversize folder containing diplomas of Dr. Lingle.
